Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe has delved into how the iconic franchise gave him the “autonomy” to try different things in his career. Despite the monetary security, he understands that it’s not a position that an artist will be in “forever.”
Daniel Radcliffe asserts he has ‘autonomy’ over his career thanks to Harry Potter
During an interview with Josh Horowitz, Daniel Radcliffe reflected on the success of the Harry Potter films, based on J.K. Rowling’s landmark novels.
Horowitz asked the actor what advice he would give to young actors. In response, Radcliffe began explaining what he told Netflix’s Stranger Things’ young cast when he met them. He recalled telling them, “Do whatever the f*** you want.” He noted that while the actors are already doing well, their goal should be to take on jobs that please them.
In response, the host pointed out that if the Harry Potter alum were ever to write a handbook, it would talk about taking advantage of the “rare license.” He added, “You had that rare license like, ‘I have security monetarily. I’m fine for a while, you know, whatever. I can be creative. I can just fly my freak flag.”
The Tony Award-winning actor agreed with Horowitz’s statement. He added that most actors are not in that position or at that “level of autonomy” over their career. Radcliffe said, “That should be the goal. If you’ve had that kind of a start in your career, now you are free to have fun.”

Furthermore, he explained that it also increases the chance of a unique project becoming successful owing to the fame garnered from the previous project. The Horns actor concluded, “That’s not a position that any of us will be in forever, but it is really, you know, while you’re in it, just make hay while the sun shines.”
Daniel Radcliffe began his acting career at the age of 10 in a 1999 mini-series, David Copperfield. In the show, he played the young version of the titular character. He later made a breakthrough with the Harry Potter films. Since then, the 36-year-old has appeared in various projects like December Boy, The Woman in Black, and Now You See Me 2. He is currently portraying Arthur Tobin in the NBC sitcom The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins.
Along with films and television series, Radcliffe has a successful Broadway career. He earned his first Tony Award for his role as Charley Kringas in the Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along.
