"It'll be nice just to not do anything and have a very quiet New Year's, and just be together and cook," he tells PEOPLE

David Burtka is looking forward to having a quiet Christmas with his family.

The actor and chef, 50, opens up about his upcoming holiday plans with husband Neil Patrick Harris, 52, and their 15-year-old twins, Harper Grace and Gideon Scott, while speaking with PEOPLE at the 24 Hour Plays Gala on Friday, Dec. 12.

"It's been wild," Burtka says. "Both our parents come into town right before Christmas. We have both our families go out to dinner and we do gifts, and all of that. Then we'll go out east to our place there and spend the two weeks of holiday break just chilling out."

Harris, Burtka says, "really wants to just do nothing" after he finishes his run on Broadway in the play ART, which closes on Dec. 21. "It'll be nice just to not do anything and have a very quiet New Year's, and just be together and cook," he continues.

Cooking, in fact, is something that Harper and Gideon have expressed interest in. "My kids want to learn how to make some stuff," Burtka says. "We'll just chill, watch movies and walk the dogs. It'll be really nice."

The 24 Hour Plays Gala took place at The Space in Irondale in the Brooklyn. The annual event featured stars writing, rehearsing and performing new plays in just 24 hours to raise money for the namesake organization’s nonprofit activities.

24 Hour Plays offers educational programming to students from middle school to college, and other professional development opportunities.

Burtka, Andrew McCarthy, Elaine Hendrix, Kirsten Vangsness, Ralph Macchio and Havana Rose Liu were among the starry participants at the event hosted by Colin Cosell.

"It's a great opportunity to raise money for the 24 Hour Plays," Burtka says. "To offer education for kids who are doing theater is so important, and to support young artists making their way is near and dear. Anytime I can help out, do service and take care of each other, I'm on board."

Burtka and Harris also curated the bar menu of the evening with selections from their new recipe book, Both Sides of the Glass: Paired Cocktails and Mocktails to Toast Any Taste.

Burtka and Harris started dating in 2004, before going public with their relationship three years later in 2007. The couple welcomed Harper and Gideon in August 2010.

The couple tied the knot in 2014, with their twins present.

Back in November, Burtka and Harper attended the Wicked: For Good premiere in New York City. The duo dressed up for the occasion, with the dad wearing a metallic bronze suit jacket and black slacks while the teen rocked a green, sequined dress with a fuzzy black jacket.

Harris spoke with PEOPLE in September at the opening of ART and shared that Gideon is already following in the family's famous footsteps.

"Gideon is in his school play right now. He’s in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest," Harris said of his son. "So it’s fun to have him watch me and to talk shop. And Harper is amazingly talented and artistic as well."
