A performing arts teacher was unexpectedly signed up to sing karaoke by a friend

His powerful rendition of “Nessun Dorma” has been widely shared online

He says he's now hearing from producers of shows like The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent

What started as a reluctant karaoke moment has turned into something much bigger for one teacher who never stopped chasing his dream.

Benjamin Gillham, a performing arts teacher, had been enjoying a night out at the Coopers Town House pub in Liverpool with a friend when his evening took an unexpected turn. Without telling him, his friend Laura put his name down to perform — and chose one of the most challenging songs possible.

“At the time I was not really in the mood for singing,” Gillham said, as per the Wirral Globe. “But I'm so glad I did it and grateful to Laura for putting my name down.”

The song? “Nessun Dorma,” the iconic opera aria known for its soaring, high-stakes vocals. “Songs like ‘Nessun Dorma' are big, so it's important not to mess up,” he continued. “Luckily, it went down well on the night.”

That might be an understatement. Footage of Gillham's performance has since spread widely online, with viewers praising his voice and stage presence.

“We had a couple of drinks and Laura put my name down without me knowing,” he recalled. “She put my name down for ‘Nessun Dorma' and I said, ‘oh come on' — and now I'm just really thankful that she did.”

The response has been overwhelming — and it's already opening doors he's long hoped for.

Gillham says he has been contacted by producers from The X Factor, The Voice UK and Britain's Got Talent, bringing him one step closer to the kind of opportunity he's been working toward for years.

“I've sung on cruise ships in the past and have chased the dream of appearing on shows like The X Factor, so I still can't believe that this has happened,” he said.

Despite the sudden attention, he's taking it all in stride. “It's all a bit crazy and I am overwhelmed by the response… I'm just taking each day as it comes.”

The experience has also been a reminder of the positive side of social media — something he often talks about with his students.

“The response on social media has been lovely,” he said. “Social media can be a horrible place sometimes… but 90% of the comments were really supportive.”

Gillham, who has performed before — including a stint on All Together Now, where he sang “Delilah” by Tom Jones — says he's always had ambitions beyond the classroom.

“I would love to follow in the footsteps of someone like Russell Watson,” he added. “But I'm also a fan of rock music. You never know what could happen.”

For now, the teacher who almost skipped his turn at karaoke is embracing the moment — and the possibility that one spontaneous performance could change everything.
